The Federal Aviation Administration has certified the Boeing 737 Max 10, the last jet in Boeing's best-selling family to win government approval. The plane was due to start flying in 2020. Approval now clears the way for deliveries of the largest version.

The Federal Aviation Administration on Tuesday signed off on the Boeing 737 Max 10 after years of delays. It is the last model in Boeing's best-selling family of jets to get government approval.

Reuters reported that the agency granted final approval, clearing the way for the planemaker to begin delivering the largest version of the airplane.

Years behind schedule

The Max 10 was set to start flying in 2020. Increased scrutiny after two Max crashes in 2018 and 2019, along with other safety issues, delayed its certification.

Engineering changes were also required, including to an anti-icing system for the aircraft's engines. The approval comes weeks after federal officials reviewed a navigation system glitch on the aircraft and deemed it was not a safety-of-flight issue.

According to FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford, as quoted by CNBC: "We will continue to hold Boeing to the highest safety standards." He said the decision follows a thorough review of the aircraft's design and safety requirements.

What the approval means for Boeing

Boeing initially planned to start delivering the Max 10 in 2020. In July, the company opened a new production line at its Everett, Washington, plant to increase 737 output, which it also assembles in Renton.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is set to appear at the Everett factory to tout the certification, according to Reuters.

CEO Kelly Ortberg said at a Morgan Stanley conference on Sept. 16 that orders for the aircraft make up about 30% of Boeing's backlog. Customers include Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines.
