Mt. Gox has pushed its creditor repayment deadline from Oct. 31, 2026, to Oct. 31, 2027. It is the fourth consecutive annual extension, as the trustee cites administrative and payment-processing difficulties.

Mt. Gox creditors face another year of waiting. In an Oct. 16 notice, rehabilitation trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi said a Japanese court approved moving the deadline from Oct. 31, 2026, to Oct. 31, 2027.

The extension covers three categories under the rehabilitation plan: Base Repayment, Early Lump-Sum Repayment and Intermediate Repayment. Kobayashi said these payments have largely been completed for creditors who met the requirements without complications, apart from certain payment types.

Unpaid claims keep the process open

Many claimants remain unpaid, however, because they have yet to complete the required procedures. Others have run into problems during processing. The trustee said the extra year would let it settle outstanding claims wherever reasonably practicable, but it gave no timetable for individual distributions or an updated count of affected creditors.

The latest postponement is the fourth consecutive annual extension since the trustee first targeted October 2023. The deadline then moved to October 2024, then October 2025, and finally October 2026.

Distributions began in July 2024

Progress has come despite the delays. Mt. Gox began distributing Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash in July 2024 through designated exchanges, including Kraken and Bitstamp. By March 2025, more than 19,500 creditors had received Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash, according to an earlier trustee announcement.

The March update outlined requirements governing further transfers, including account verification, corrections to creditor information, exchange acceptance arrangements and security checks. These steps need coordination among claimants, the trustee and designated exchanges, which creates potential obstacles even after creditors submit their repayment details.

Kobayashi directs creditors to the claims system

Kobayashi has pointed unpaid creditors to the official rehabilitation claims system, where inquiries can be submitted through the frequently asked questions section. He advised claimants to log in before contacting the trustee to help with identity verification, and warned that requests sent outside the system could be harder to process.

The trustee also cautioned that the volume of inquiries could delay responses. The process traces back to February 2014, when the Tokyo-based exchange filed for bankruptcy after reporting the loss of approximately 850,000 Bitcoin.
