Bitcoin is trading as a risk asset while AI-related credit stress and higher oil prices weigh on markets. QCP says the cryptocurrency has not established itself as an independent safe haven, and the next FOMC meeting is only days away.

Bitcoin is being pulled into a broader risk-off trade as AI-related credit stress collides with another surge in oil prices, just days before the next FOMC meeting. A recent QCP report said BTC is still behaving like a risk asset.

AI credit stress spills into crypto

QCP's research pointed to CoreWeave's five-year CDS at roughly 1,128 basis points, more than three times Oracle's 30 bps. The report reads this as a sign that markets are growing concerned about the financing burden of the AI infrastructure boom.

The stress appears to reach beyond one company. QCP's market note said CoreWeave fell 10% on October 10 as investors reassessed capital costs and debt serviceability across the neocloud sector. The repricing has spilled into equities and crypto, while longer-dated US Treasuries benefited from a flight to quality.

Equities felt it too. South Korea's KOSPI fell by over 14% in a single week in the middle of the month, its worst 5-day performance since 2008, according to the report.

Bitcoin has not decoupled

QCP argued that bitcoin has continued to trade in line with broader equity sentiment rather than establishing itself as an independent safe haven. A recent CryptoPotato report showed that the largest digital asset has stayed unusually sensitive to tech stocks and macro conditions after the latest inflation-driven correction.

Oil adds a second pressure point

Oil compounds the problem. The latest Middle East escalation has pushed Brent above $110 and complicated the outlook for inflation and the Federal Reserve.

QCP's macro report noted that visible tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains extremely distorted, with only three AIS-broadcasting vessels recorded on October 20. Estimates that include "dark" ships suggest actual flows were much larger, at roughly 3.7 million to 13 million barrels per day.
