Examiners at the SEC named "super intelligence and other advanced technologies" as an exam priority for the first time in its FY2027 list. Tokenization also appears, under evolving market infrastructure risks. The priorities cover more than 34,000 registrants.
The SEC's Division of Examinations published its FY2027 examination priorities on Thursday, and the eight-point list explicitly names "super intelligence and other advanced technologies" as an area of heightened scrutiny for the first time. The language covers technologies that may affect market operations, compliance, fraud prevention and investor protection.
AI moves from business tool to market variable
Under the list, AI sits under a category called "emerging technologies," which signals the Division's intent to scrutinize how AI tools affect compliance programs and fraud detection across registrants. Prior editions focused on AI as a business tool advisers were adopting, while the 2027 language positions it as a systemic market variable.
Division Director Keith Cassidy framed the priorities as an adaptive posture. Cassidy said, in the SEC release: "Our approach enables us to adapt to changing market conditions".
Tokenization gets its own line
It also listed "risks associated with evolving market infrastructure, including Treasury clearing reforms, tokenization, and related developments" as a priority area. For brokers, investment advisers and transfer agents already building tokenization product lines, that line means their compliance programs will draw examiner attention, not just policy attention.
The Division noted the list is not exhaustive, and examiners keep discretion to review anything touching federal securities law compliance across the full registrant base. That base now includes more than 34,000 registrants, among them investment advisers, investment companies, broker-dealers, clearing agencies and transfer agents.
Crypto stays off the list
The FY2026 priorities, released in November 2025, dropped crypto as a standalone focus area for the first time since 2021. The 2027 document does not restore that section, but it folds AI risk and tokenization into the list.
