Tesla introduced Optimus Academy, a program in which its humanoid robots learn real-world tasks by doing them. Elon Musk indicated Tesla intends to produce 10,000 to 20,000 Optimus robots for it, while external deliveries are targeted for the end of 2027.
Tesla wants its humanoid robots to train themselves. The company introduced Optimus Academy, a training program where Optimus units learn real-world tasks by performing them.
The reveal came during Tesla's earnings call for the quarter. The call took place on October 21, 2026, and covered Q3 2026.
Optimus Academy gets its own robot training fleet
Tesla describes the Academy as a large-scale internal initiative. Early Optimus units will work on real-world tasks, and the data they generate will feed back into the robots' AI models.
Musk indicated that Tesla intends to produce between 10,000 to 20,000 Optimus robots specifically for the Academy. CEO Musk compared the process to how a toddler learns.
Tesla is also preparing a new video, expected within the next couple of months, to show the robots performing AI-driven tasks.
Fremont production starts, with a challenging ramp
Alongside the Academy, Tesla started producing Optimus at its Fremont, California factory. The robots are built on a dedicated line that originally served Model S and X production, and Tesla called them its first "production-quality bots."
However, Tesla acknowledged that the production ramp remains at an early and somewhat challenging stage, even though it said the manufacturing process has been validated for commercial purposes.
Austin plant and AI5 chip are next
A larger Optimus production facility is under construction in Austin, Texas. Tesla also plans to integrate its AI5 chip into Optimus robots around April 2027.
External deliveries to outside customers are targeted for the end of 2027.
