President Donald Trump urged data center companies to pay host communities a dividend to win local support. The idea arrives without a defined policy or funding mechanism, while opposition to the facilities keeps growing ahead of the November midterm elections.
Donald Trump told data center companies on Wednesday to strike financial deals with local communities to secure support for the costly facilities. He said operators should pay the community, or individuals within it, a dividend.
According to Trump's Truth Social post, he has seen unpopular projects become popular once a deal is struck: "MAKE DEALS, and get them built!!!"
A second pledge on electricity
Trump paired the payment idea with a point on power. He said large new data centers are mandated by him to make their own electricity and to give or sell any excess back to the local community or grid. He added that electricity prices could see a substantial decrease.
However, the remarks stop short of a concrete plan. They do not define a specific policy, name participating companies, or lay out a confirmed funding mechanism. Who would receive the money, how it would be calculated, and whether it would be voluntary or required all remain undefined.
Opposition and pressure on the sector
Data centers have become a hot-button issue, and public opposition has been growing, with multiple states considering moratoriums. Much of the concern centers on water usage, power consumption, electricity prices and the amount of space some centers need.
Polling reflects that mood. Gallup and NBC News put opposition to nearby data centers at 69-70%. The idea is not new either: on September 29, 2026, Trump floated community dividends alongside bonuses for teachers in areas that host data centers.
Meanwhile, data center stocks have come under pressure this week amid concerns about the financial health of the sector. As the buildout grows more costly, companies are increasingly turning to debt markets to finance deals.
The next signals to watch are whether the suggestion becomes formal policy and whether any major operators volunteer to pay a dividend.
