UBS has ranked five mining companies as its top copper stocks, with Anglo American first. The bank also flagged commodity price, currency, political and operational risks across the sector.
UBS named five mining companies as leading investment opportunities in copper, while noting the risks that come with commodity exposure. Anglo American tops the list, followed by Teck Resources, First Quantum Minerals, Freeport-McMoRan and Hudbay Minerals.
However, the bank stressed that every miner faces volatile commodity prices and currency fluctuations, which may differ materially from expectations. UBS also said the sector is exposed to political, financial and operational risks that could significantly affect company and industry performance.
The price target for Anglo is based on a sum-of-the-parts valuation. For Teck, which ranks second, UBS uses a 12-month forward EV/EBITDA approach. Freeport-McMoRan, in fourth place, has a target derived from an EBITDA multiple.
First Quantum, in third place, carries a specific risk tied to Cobre Panama. UBS notes the company has invested approximately $10 billion to date in the project. The bank identifies various outcomes for First Quantum to manage liquidity risks while the mine is non-operational, including cuts to capital expenditures and potential asset sales. Its UBS target rests on 7x EV/EBITDA on 2028 estimates.
Hudbay Minerals rounds out the top five, and its target also comes from an EBITDA multiple. UBS points to company-specific risks for Hudbay, including delivery on growth projects across its global footprint. The investment case is also linked to Copper World, which UBS describes as a material project with financing, delivery and other risks.
